Program Description

Preschool, After School Enrichment, Summer Camp

MLV is a progressive and inclusive preschool. We draw upon many different schools of thought in the field of early childhood education but are particularly influenced and greatly inspired by the Reggio Emilia approach to teaching. Our understanding of the Reggio Emilia approach begins with an imperative respect for the child. A respect for their innate ability. A respect for their sense of wonder. A respect for the rights of every child.

At My Little Village we understand the importance of the idea of “teacher as learner” and we spend much of our day observing and thoughtfully reflecting on the work that our students do. We ask questions of our students and we listen to their answers, incorporating what they already know into the classroom environment as we continually provide provocations to stimulate imagination and wonder. We value each child as a unique individual, we allow plenty of time for both independent and teacher directed play and we encourage each child to gain and master independence in every day play.

Our physical space is designed to allow interactions between both of our classrooms with windows placed strategically to allow our students to see outside, into the hallway and to allow parents and teachers to observe classroom work. During open play our students can often times move freely between the classrooms fostering mixed age play where our little ones can gain a higher level of understanding from their older peers and our older students can learn empathy and understanding of the younger students, furthering real life social interactions. We incorporate natural materials into our classrooms as much as possible, allowing the children the opportunity to work with items from nature every day and ‘real life’ items within the classroom replace plastic ‘made for kids’ materials.

Our teachers are highly committed to the community and philosophy of My Little Village. We meet at least once a week, if not more, to reflect on our practice, to improve our understanding of our work, to collaborate on important topics and to support each other in our efforts. Several times a year we gather for staff development, parent workshops and attend a variety of parent and community socials to further the important bond between school and home.
