Description, Responsibilities, & Duties

This administrator/educator works closely with all members of the school community to create and sustain a system of relationships that furthers the mission, goals and values of the organization. The director/pedagogista is responsible for providing all of the services necessary to effectively operate a high quality program for children, parents, faculty and staff. The person in this role has a highly developed knowledge of best practices in early childhood education as interpreted by naeyc and a deep and insightful understanding of the values supporting Reggio inspired practices. As both an administrator and an educator, the person in this role must apply business practices and protocols in addition to working as an educational coordinator and an ambassador for the school within the local community and beyond.

Primary responsibilities include:
• Collaboration with Administrator, Board of Trustees, parents,
faculty, children, and greater community
• Communication with all elements of the school community by
verbal/written/electronic channels
• Collaboration with Administrator, faculty and parents to ensure
health and safety of children/licensing
• Oversight of annual budget in collaboration with Administrator,
Board Treasurer and Board Chair
• Organization of Preschool Calendar in collaboration with
• Hiring and evaluation of faculty and staff members and
maintenance of personnel records
• Selection and renewal of employee benefits
• Development of teacher and staff salaries and maintenance of
payroll records
• Coordination of fundraising efforts in collaboration with
Administrator, Board and parents
• Collaboration with Administrator to implement admissions
processes for preschool and toddler classes
• Collaboration with Administrator and teachers to welcome new
families and children
• Organizing and leading parent meetings and events
• Maintaining relationships with local private elementary
schools/Submission of kindergarten evaluations
• Coordination of assessments and services for children with
special rights in each class
• Organizing and guiding professional development experiences
for teachers throughout school year
• Engaging in professional endeavors with other educators in the
• Collaboration with teachers, atelieristi and children in the
creation of curriculum
• Documentation of teachers’, parents’ and children’s
experiences and learning in articles, books,
panels, Weekly Journals, monthly newsletter and installations—
in collaboration with teachers and atelieristi
• Collaboration with IT services in maintenance of school
equipment and school website
• Collaboration with facilities supervisor in maintenance and
improvement of facility/grounds
• Selection and purchase of school curriculum materials,
equipment and furnishings

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements

- Education: MA degree in early childhood education, child
development or a related field
-California Site Supervisor Permit preferred, but alternate
qualifications according to California law accepted
-Significant experience in both teaching and leadership roles
required, particularly in a Reggio inspired setting
-Business knowledge preferred as related to school administration

She/he is an accomplished educator with passion, energy, creativity and integrity who treats teachers, parents and children with respect and compassion. The person in this role is collaborative, yet decisive, and is willing to serve the school with generosity, sensitivity and dedication. The director/pedagogista demonstrates mature judgment in making choices on behalf of the organization.

Program Description

Palisades Preschool is a private, independent, nonprofit, Reggio inspired school for young children, ages toddler through kindergarten, located in Santa Monica, California. Serving a community of 60 full-time preschool children and their families, as well as 22 toddler children and their parents who meet weekly, the school has 4 classrooms and several atelier spaces in addition to a very lovely outdoor play and garden space. The faculty includes 8 classroom co-teachers, 3 support co-teachers, 4 atelieristi, 2 music specialists, one director/pedagogista, one school administrator, and facility/lunch support staff. The school has enjoyed its location in a 1926 church building since 1999 and is situated near the Santa Monica palisades overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The school year begins in early August and ends in mid-June; however, the role of director/pedagogista is a 12 month position, including flexible summer hours.
