Description, Responsibilities, & Duties

RHP’s Mission:

Red Hook Playgroup provides a rich, progressive, community-based early education for children between the ages of 2.6 and 5. We believe that all children have the desire, ability, and motivation to learn, and we seek to nurture these natural impulses by providing a beautiful, supportive, and stimulating environment to encourage all the young minds in our care.

RHP believes preschool education is an investment in the community, and we hope to encourage that sensibility in each of our students. To this end, RHP fosters an environment of collaborative exploration, investigation, and discovery where children are encouraged to think critically and creatively, to respect and support their peers, and to empathize with and learn from each member of their community.

Description of the role:

The Executive Director will work alongside RHP’s board of directors and lead our dynamic teaching staff and engaged families to continue RHP’s tradition of offering a high quality, child-centered preschool experience for neighborhood children. The role balances service as a strategic leader – attending to the changing landscape of early childhood education and RHP’s role in our community both now and in the future – with overseeing the day to day operation of the school. Key responsibilities include:

Assuming responsibility for every aspect of school life, and ensuring that our day to day work matches our mission and values
Recruiting, retaining, and supporting a talented and diverse staff with a shared philosophy while cultivating a high-quality learning environment in which teachers can develop their practice and children can thrive
Ensuring compliance with regulations governing the operation of a Group Day Care under Article 47, and managing the day to day operations of our busy building
Overseeing all aspects of the financial operations of the school, including budget, tuition and tuition assistance, grants, etc.
Serving as the school’s liaison with families, managing family relationships from inquiry, admissions, and enrollment through the alumni years
Guiding strategic planning and decision-making processes in areas including programming, DEI initiatives, and employee recruiting and retention
Collaborating with the board of directors on fundraising initiatives and community engagement
Producing high quality written and visual products that accurately and clearly communicate our approach and the work we do to a variety of stakeholders and audiences

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements

The ideal candidate possesses the following traits:

Insightful, empathetic, and creative thinker with a strategic vision for RHP
Passionate about early childhood education, and ability to connect with young children and their families
Prioritizes social justice as a value of the school, both inside the classroom and out
Collaborative and flexible
Familiar with varying educational approaches (including Montessori, Reggio Emilia, and others) and knowledgeable about the trends and landscape of early childhood education in NYC right now; experience with UPK and U3K a plus
Plugged in to the greater early education community and able to keep RHP connected with programs in our neighborhood and beyond
Organized, efficient, able to prioritize and delegate tasks
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal


Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field
New York State teacher certification
Minimum five years of experience in early childhood, with at least two years in a leadership role
DOE experience a plus
Ability to meet all DOHMH background checks and licensing requirements

Salary & Benefits

Starting range $90,000-$115,000; commensurate with education and experience
Option to enroll in medical, dental, and vision insurance with RHP covering 85% of medical and 75% of dental and vision premiums
Option to enroll in a Simple IRA with up to 3% match
Paid holidays and vacations
