Description, Responsibilities, & Duties

Fiddlehead School of Arts and Sciences is one of Maine’s first approved public charter schools. We are located in Gray, Maine, and serve students grades Pre-K through fifth grade. Fiddlehead is committed to the growth and development of the whole child: socially, emotionally, physically, academically, intellectually, and artistically. The goal of a Fiddlehead Education is for students to build a toolbox of habits, skills, and wonderings to drive a lifelong love of learning. We aim to empower learners to seek answers to their own questions and to develop the means necessary for this endeavor.

DESCRIPTION & RESPONSIBILITIES:
We are looking for a teacher with special skills in the atelier (art studio) and the areas of environmental science and ecology. This is a full-time, specialist position working with all classes at the school to integrate and facilitate learning in the visual arts and sciences.

The ideal candidate would be responsible for the following:

Working collaboratively with classroom teachers to weave art and environmental sciences into classroom curriculum.

Developing curriculum based on Work Sampling System standards and alignment with classroom themes and areas of study.

Managing the atelier space (art studio), including organization and presentation of materials and classroom management of students.

Developing meaningful experiences with multiple languages including nature, light and shadow, color, paint, clay, movement, and sound.

Building relationships with visiting artists & scientists and link programming with the communities.

Documenting a process and elevate the visibility of children’s ideas & theories.

Leading art & science-based trips in the community.

Developing and maintaining a school garden and gardening curriculum.

Organizing and facilitating 2 times per year Art & Science community nights.

Inspiring teachers and school through diverse perspectives.

Other:

Performing other position-related duties as assigned by the lead teacher, Coordinator of Teaching and Learning, or Executive Director. Reinforcing school policies and rules and maintain appropriate safety procedures.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements

Holds a Bachelor’s Degree

Three years working in an elementary school setting

Experience in art & working with materials

Experience in ecology

Experience working with a diverse range of students

A commitment to equity and high expectations for all students, including the ability to contribute to a safe, respectful learning community

Professional behavior that addresses job responsibilities, policies, and procedures

A desire and ability to partner with families, including effective and sensitive communication

Current authorization to work in the United States- candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Skilled in Documentation, video, photography & editing programs
Strong communication skills
Strong classroom management skills and experience with Responsive Classroom, PBIS, etc
