It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 13th NAREA Winter Conference, “Affirming Children’s Rights in a Changing World: Embracing Responsibility, Community, and Creative Thinking.”
Since our inception 20 years ago, NAREA and Reggio Children have worked in partnership to establish professional development opportunities for over 250,000 educators, families, advocates, policymakers, and community members across North America. These initiatives held in host communities serve as a foundation for NAREA. Now, we come together virtually, perhaps more eager than ever before, to stand and act together so that we can change the world for the better.
We are excited about a future filled with innovative and motivating plans that involve the collaboration of NAREA, Reggio Children, and educators in North America. NAREA envisions and works to fashion a world where all embrace, promote, and defend children’s rights to be seen and valued as citizens with a sense of agency, capabilities, and intelligence. We unite with Reggio Emilia in continuing research and actions for building education with merit for the world’s children.
It is with great pleasure and gratitude that we welcome our colleagues Alessandra Braglia, Chiara Ferrarini, and Alessandro Mainini, as well as interpreter Jane McCall, from Reggio Emilia, Italy. It is through their sharing and exchange that we will continue to construct strong interpretations of the values, principles, and experiences of the municipal infant-toddler centers and preschools of Reggio Emilia. It is with deep appreciation that we recognize those in Reggio who worked to make this virtual event a reality during a period of great uncertainty. We know we speak for all of us in thanking the community of Reggio Emilia, including Reggio Children and the Istituzione – Preschools and Infant-toddler Centers of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, Italy, for all they are doing to carry on during this period of difficult local and global conditions.
With the utmost respect, we recognize your contributions in and out of the classroom during a year filled with tremendous challenges. Your dedication to the children and families in your schools and communities inspires and gives hope to many. The world will continue to change, that we can be sure of, yet together we can choose to create a more beautiful, creative, and enriching educational landscape rooted in the Reggio Emilia Approach. We hope that our time together will strongly contribute to your professional growth and serve as a reference in your days ahead.
