St. Mary’s seeks an engaged Executive Director (ED) to lead our non-denominational, nonprofit, cooperative child care and preschool that provides care for children from 18 months to 5 years in a mixed-age classroom setting, in addition to offering afterschool and summer camp programs for school-aged children. The ED oversees all operations, administration and program development for the organization, in keeping with a Reggio Emilia approach and core belief that family and community involvement foster a caring, trusting, healthy environment for children. The ED also supports the organization’s evolution and cultivates relationships with a diverse array of internal and external constituents, including referral and funding sources. The position reports to a board of directors and oversees a staff of 40 full and part-time employees, as well as an active pool of parent volunteers. Centrally located on the University of Pennsylvania’s campus, St. Mary’s is located in a church building but incorporated as a separate entity.
• Three to five years of experience in management (ideally experience in the nonprofit sector), preferably within an organization with a $1M+ annual budget.
• Proven experience in program or project management and evaluation in education; leadership of a childcare center preferred.
• Experience in financial management with proven skills in budgeting and financial analysis.
• Proven ability to influence and drive organizational evolution, while maintaining valued culture and aligning mission and business goals.
• Experience in building, managing, and motivating staff and volunteers.
• Experience working with a diverse constituency; ability to excel in a multicultural environment.
• Demonstrated knowledge of fundraising trends along with track record of success in fund development (of restricted and unrestricted funds) through various techniques (including grant writing, donor cultivation, and event management) or equivalent.
• Substantial experience in securing, executing, and overseeing government and other grants.
• Superior interpersonal skills with keen ability to build effective relationships, credibility and rapport with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.
• Exceptional written and oral communications skills, including the ability to present and speak publicly on relevant issues.
• Demonstrated experience in leveraging, managing, and collaborating with a board of directors.
• Affinity for working with families and youth, specifically in mixed-age, play-based, child-centered environments.
• Appreciation/knowledge of Keystone STARS childcare system.
• Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred; must be eligible to serve as a childcare director under the PA state law.
• Ability to travel locally.
