SPANISH LANGUAGE ACQUISITION IS A CORNERSTONE OF THE BENNETT DAY SCHOOL PROGRAM AND BEGINS IN PREK. OUR APPROACH TO SECOND LANGUAGE ACQUISITION FOCUSES ON REAL WORLD EXPERIENCE AND INTEGRATION IN THE WORK OF THE CLASSROOM COMMUNITY. THE SPANISH TEACHER WILL PLAN AND IMPLEMENT A SPANISH CURRICULUM TO PREPARE STUDENT IN GRADES PK-1ST GRADE TO DEVELOP ORAL LANGUAGE ACQUISITION AND BEGINNING SKILLS OF READING AND WRITING SPANISH.
WITH THE SUPPORT OF A PROVEN CURRICULUM, THE SPANISH TEACHER WILL IMMERSE HIM OR HERSELF INTO THE DAILY HAPPENINGS OF THE CLASSROOM, INTEGRATING SPANISH IN MEANINGFUL, CONTEXTUAL WAYS. THE SPANISH TEACHER WILL ALSO ENRICH THE EXPERIENCE OF LANGUAGE ACQUISITION WITH CULTURAL UNDERSTANDINGS OF SPANISH SPEAKING COMMUNITIES IN CHICAGO AND AROUND THE WORLD.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
FACILITATE AND PLAN GRADE-LEVEL SPANISH CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT.
PREPARE, MAINTAIN, AND ORDER CLASSROOM MATERIALS.
DOCUMENT AND EVALUATE STUDENTS ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS.
INTERACT WITH STUDENTS’ FAMILIES FOR VARIOUS EVENTS (IE: ATTEND CONFERENCES, FAMILY OPEN HOUSE; SEND WEEKLY NEWSLETTERS/BLOGGING).
PARTICIPATE IN ANNUAL HARVEST FESTIVALS.
PARTICIPATE IN WEEKLY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES.
LEAD MONTHLY SPANISH INTEGRATION DURING PD MEETING.
ATTEND WEEKLY FACULTY MEETINGS.
PARTICIPATE IN ONGOING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM.
SELF-EVALUATE AND REFLECT YOUR PERFORMANCE.
SELF-EVALUATE AND REFLECT STUDENT PERFORMANCE.
ENGAGE IN AT LEAST THREE FAMILY/COMMUNITY EVENTS.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
FLUENT IN SPANISH.
BACHELOR’S DEGREE (B.A.) FROM FOUR-YEAR COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY IS REQUIRED.
EEXPERIENCE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAMS OR SPANISH LANGUAGE INSTRUCTION IN SCHOOLS.
EXPERIENCE WITH SCHOOL AND PARENT COMMUNICATION AND CONTACT.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
LANGUAGE ABILITY – ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE CLEARLY AND EFFECTIVELY WITH STUDENTS, FAMILIES, COLLEAGUES, AND MANAGERS IN ENGLISH AND IN SPANISH. ABILITY TO READ AND INTERPRET DOCUMENTS SUCH AS SAFETY RULES, OPERATING AND MAINTAINING INSTRUCTIONS, AND PROCEDURE MANUALS. ABILITY TO WRITE ROUTINE REPORTS AND CORRESPONDENCE. ABILITY TO SPEAK EFFECTIVELY BEFORE GROUPS OF CUSTOMERS OR EMPLOYEES OR THE ORGANIZATION.
REASONING ABILITY – ABILITY TO SOLVE PRACTICAL PROBLEMS AND DEAL WITH A VARIETY OR CONCRETE VARIABLES IN SITUATIONS WHERE ONLY LIMITED STANDARDIZATION EXISTS.
COMPUTER SKILLS – COMFORT WITH APPLE A PLUS, EMAIL, AND INTERNET SOFTWARE.
IDEAL ATTRIBUTES – ABILITY TO SELF-MOTIVATE, AND ABILITY TO CONSISTENTLY DELIVER HIGH-QUALITY WORK PRODUCT. ABILITY TO THRIVE IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHICH IS BOTH AD-HOC, AS WELL AS AN ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH ONE MUST PLAY MULTIPLE ROLES TO SUPPORT THE ORGANIZATION. SELF-STARTER IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST.
