Atelierista/Art Director

Location:

Child Care Center in Norwich
Norwich VT USA

We are situated in the Upper Valley of Vermont/New Hampshire, a region known for its natural beauty — the Connecticut River for water sports, the mountains for skiing and hiking, rolling hills and farmland — as well as a lively arts community. Hanover NH is a stone’s throw from our Center, home to Dartmouth College and all of the cultural and intellectual benefits found in a college town.

Start Date: June 7, 2021

Description, Responsibilities, & Duties

The Child Care Center in Norwich is seeking a full- or part-time atelierista/art teacher to oversee an atelier that links to projects and investigations in our age 1-5 rooms. This position coincides with our shift to a Reggio Emilia-inspired program that prizes children’s innate sense of wonder, the arts, and outdoor education.

Bring vision and creativity to an atelier/art program still in its infancy. Collaborate with teachers to bring children’s explorations to creative life in our 6 classrooms and 2 after-school programs. In your beautiful art studio/atelier, offer children creative, process-oriented ways to explore and express themselves with paint, clay and other media. Join children and teachers for outside art adventures. Plan mini exhibits, online and in person–emphasizing process and experimentation over product. Design creative ways to involve our families.

Position is open until filled and start date is flexible: most important is finding a person who is the “right fit” for our Center.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements

Art teaching experience preferred, ideally in a Reggio-inspired program. Familiarity with and commitment to the Reggio Emilia approach. An enthusiastic team spirit, solid work ethic, great organizational and planning skills. You are a self-starter with the ability and excitement to build on an art program that is fairly new to our Center and that will integrate into all we offer to our children.

Salary & Benefits

Hourly rate ranges from $16-$22/hour, commensurate with education and experience.

Comprehensive health benefits for full-time staff: 90% coverage for Blue Cross Blue Shield Standard Silver package, 100% coverage for dental and vision insurance. 5 weeks of vacation/sick/personal time to start. Professional development in the Reggio Emilia approach with our Antioch University-based consultant.

Study Tours to Italy planned to start in 2022 or when it’s deemed safe to travel internationally.

Application Procedures

To apply, please submit your resume, cover letter and two professional letters of reference to CCCN Director: lisa.sjostrom@childcarenorwich.org.

Feel free to call with questions: 802-649-1403.

Position is open until filled.

Program Description

Under new leadership, the Center is in the process of reimagining our approach to ECE (early childhood education), shifting to a Reggio Emilia-inspired philosophy that prizes children’s capabilities, curiosity, interests and ingenuity, along with the arts and outdoor education. We are in the process of renaming our Center, designing a new website and crafting new mission & vision statements to better reflect our shift to a Reggio-inspired approach.

In general, we serve on average 60 children total in our nursery, two toddler classrooms and three preschool classrooms. We run two after-school programs for local elementary school children, grades kindergarten-Gr 6, one based at the Montshire Museum of Science, our next-door neighbor.

We are enjoying a revived reputation for innovative programs, excellent teachers, community partnerships, and a creative, child-focused learning environment.
