Program Description

We believe that our mission is to nurture creativity, happiness, and passionate discovery and inquiry in our students. Children grow to be confident and innovative in their thinking while fostering the belief that they are an integral part of a global society and can make a difference to make it better.

As educators, our work with children is informed by: current research on child development, the work of preschools in Reggio Emilia, the standards and criteria of NAEYC and our faith in the competence and abilities of young children.

Early years students at ECA embrace challenges proactively with confidence, curiosity and creativity. They are caring, respectful and tolerant members of a diverse community of learners. Children in early childhood are willing to take risks and reflect on their learning. They develop the skills that lead to a balanced life. The ECA community sees young learners as competent and capable individuals who are rich in ideas. They are trusted to succeed and develop the tools to thrive in a complex world.

1) The Learning Environment

We believe that children’s interaction with their immediate world is one of the most powerful promoters of learning. We strive to provide safe and appealing learning spaces that foster relationships, communication, and independence. Children’s interactions, in and with our spaces, stimulate them to become active learners. Both the indoor and outdoor learning environments provide children with ongoing opportunities to:
make choices and decisions with confidence
use materials in flexible and creative ways
initiate inquiry and ask questions
work collaboratively with others
sustain their interests and extend their knowledge
develop understanding
problem solve
explore possibilities

2) The Value and Importance of Play

We believe that play is many related things: exploring, satisfying curiosity, testing, probing, experimenting, influencing and fun. It is spontaneous and meaningful to children. Play is the means through which they engage the world and is the foundation for collaboration, learning, abstraction and reasoning. It leads to who we are, how we express ourselves, how we think, and what we do. Young children in the ECC Program are given structured and non-structured periods of time and as much space as possible to explore, investigate and play with a variety of materials, in order to learn about themselves, other people and the world around them. We believe that the most effective way to promote the development of thinking, social, communication, self-management and research skills is to support both personal and collaborative play.

3) Role of the Teacher

We see the teacher as a facilitator of learning and development. Teachers provide children with warmth, understanding, respect and acceptance in order to promote feelings of confidence, comfort and safety. The teacher serves their role through the following responsibilities.

Creators of Learning Opportunities
● Teachers observe, listen, and pay close attention to children’s interests and prepare experiences to engage and provoke their thinking, curiosity and imagination.

Reporter:
● Teachers nurture positive relationships with parents through the sharing and exchange of information. We seek to regularly communicate children’s learning, activities, achievements and goals with parents.

Custodian of the Learning Environment
● Teachers take care to provide an aesthetically beautiful, inspiring and engaging learning environment for children.

Model of Positive Behavior
● Teachers model positive attitudes and respectful relationships for children.

Supporter
● Teachers view children holistically and support them with warmth, understanding and acceptance. Teachers aid children in their problem solving by providing the questions and resources needed to continue their inquiries.
