Description, responsibilities, and duties:
The Child Development Teacher plans and carries out learning activities for children in a college child development center as well as assisting early childhood education students of the Community College in gaining practical teaching experience as part of their curriculum.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the Director of Child Development Center or other administrator, the Child Development Teacher is accountable for contributing to the development and care of children enrolled in the College’s Child Laboratory School through effective performance in these essential functional areas:
Key responsibilities include:
- Teaching the Laboratory School children
- Accountable for providing age and developmentally appropriate learning experiences for assigned children in the College’s Laboratory School
- Overseeing student teachers’ academic lab experience.
- Accountable for contributing to the practical experience of the College’s early childhood education students.
- Parent communications.
- Accountable for communicating with parents about their children’s progress as well as about the services of the Laboratory School
- Participating in Center administration.
- Accountable for contributing to the effective management of the Laboratory School by participating in its administration.
- Additional responsibilities include: Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies
- Service on assigned committees and task forces
- Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings which may occur during evenings and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
Minimum qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or an appropriately related field together with two (2) or more years of experience in a related field; or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Early childhood education
- Child development and learning principles and applications
- Childcare administration
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
Special Requirements:
- Hold a valid First Aid, CPR, and Medication Administration Certificates approved by Connecticut Office of Early Childhood Division of Licensing; Connecticut Office of Early Childhood Health & Safety Training, Mandated Reporter Training.
- Incumbents must be fingerprinted through the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood and approved to work in a childcare setting.
Preferred Qualifications
- Current or previous experience with the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards and the Connecticut Documentation and Observation for Teaching Systems.
- Current or previous working experience contributing to the NAEYC Accreditation process.
- Current or previous working experience maintaining the State of Connecticut Early Childhood Education licensing regulations for child care centers.
- Current or previous experience with mentoring or training adult learners in laboratory school and/or with preservice teachers.
- In-depth working knowledge and/or experience implementing the Reggio Emilia Approach.
- Two (2) or more years of experience teaching preschool aged children.
- Demonstrated experience communicating speaking, reading, and writing with students, caregivers, and staff in Spanish and/or Albanian.
- Demonstrated working experience utilizing and evaluating classroom and behavior management strategies (e.g., Pyramid Model, Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports, etc.).
Salary & Benefits
Salary and Benefits:
Salary range: $57,188-$61,026 approximate annual. Salary is based on qualifications, education, job-related experience, and internal equity. The Early Childhood Education Laboratory School maintains an authentic, research-based early learning environment focused on foundational learning with respect for individual needs and abilities of young children and families; in collaboration with the CT State Naugatuck Valley Early Childhood Education program, the Lab School provides innovative and intensive training for students in the ECED program at CT State and other connected disciplines; and serves as a resource and model academic laboratory school, demonstrating high-quality early childhood education teaching practices for professionals, partners, and organizations within CT State and our greater community, all while incorporating the principles of the world renowned educational philosophy, the Reggio Emilia Approach.
