Reggio Emilia | May 23–29, 2026

Welcome Participants!

Children and Adults Researching in the Daily Life

NAREA is collaborating with Reggio Children to offer a study group experience in Reggio Emilia focusing on the interconnected values, principles, attitudes, research, and experiences that have come to characterize Reggio Emilia’s approach to early education. Those with a long history studying this approach will be interested to meet contemporary views, told through the stories of children and adults. Participants are expected to have read Charter of Services, Indications, and Historical Notes and General Information.

Travel Tips

What to take
  • Passport
  • Water bottle
  • Backpack/bag that is easy to carry to/from study tour location
  • Pens/notebook for taking notes
  • Chargers, adapters
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Umbrella

What to wear

Dress comfortably, with special consideration for walking shoes. Italian culture does not go to the extreme casual—never pajama bottoms in public, for example. Comfortable, summertime attire is the norm. Air conditioning is not the same as in the U.S., so it is best to dress for the temperature outside as that is often similar to the temperature inside. Hotels have more air conditioning than the lecture hall or preschools. It can be quite hot in late May so check the weather before finalizing packing.

What to eat

Breakfast is provided each day at the hotel. Lunch is provided each day at the Loris Malaguzzi International Center during the study days. Mid-morning refreshments are also provided. Dinner is on your own.

Loris Malaguzzi International Center

This is our daily location. You will walk to the Center from your hotels (taxis are also available). Pause is a coffee bar with pastries and drinks for purchase, located inside the Center.

Dining Etiquette

It works best and is more culturally appropriate when dining with groups to use just one credit card. It’s not typical for restaurants to split checks for a table. Often, one person will incur the credit card charge and fellow diners will pay that person with cash or Venmo.

Money

There are many ATMs throughout the city for accessing cash in the form of Euros. Typically ATMs will have the best exchange rate. You can also use credit cards (note that not all merchants accept AMEX). International fees are incurred for debit/credit card purchases. Contact your bank/credit card company prior to departure to alert them that you will be traveling internationally.

Texts and Calls

Check with your cell phone provider to see what the cost for international services will be. An alternative to using your cell service would be WhatsApp, which you can download for free. However, you will incur charges from your cell provider if you do not connect to wi-fi locally. Download the app prior to travel.
